August 1945
The airfield was a military installation of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It ceased operations and was decommissioned following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II and the subsequent dissolution of the Japanese military by Allied occupation forces.
The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible traces of its original runways or aviation facilities. The land is now primarily used for industrial and civil purposes. Key occupants of the site include the Kagawa Prefectural Driving School (Kagawa-ken Unten Menkyo Center) and a large industrial park with factories and warehouses for companies such as Okura Industrial Co., Ltd. A memorial stone dedicated to the Takuma Naval Air Group has been erected nearby to commemorate the site's history.
Marugame Airfield was an Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) airbase constructed around 1942-1943 during World War II. Its primary function was as a training airfield, serving as a branch base for the Takuma Naval Air Group (詫間海軍航空隊). Naval aviators were trained here on aircraft such as the Yokosuka K5Y, a Type 93 Intermediate Trainer known as 'Akatombo' (Red Dragonfly). In the final stages of the war, the airfield's role shifted, and it became a base for Kamikaze Special Attack Units. These units were equipped with aircraft like the Kyushu K11W 'Shiragiku' (White Chrysanthemum) operational trainer, which were modified for suicide attack missions. The airfield was a target of Allied bombing raids in 1945 before its closure.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Marugame Airfield. The land has been extensively and permanently redeveloped with major industrial and public infrastructure for over 75 years, making any future use for aviation purposes infeasible.
