Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 1980s to early 1990s. A precise, officially documented closure date is not readily available, but aviation records and historical accounts indicate that operations ceased during this period.

Reason for Closure

The closure was primarily due to economic and operational factors. The airfield's operator, Nishi-Nippon Kūyu Co., Ltd. (West Japan Air Transport), faced a significant decline in demand for its core services based at Tsuyazaki, most notably agricultural aviation (crop dusting). This, combined with a strategic decision to consolidate operations at more central and cost-effective locations, led to the airfield's closure.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and repurposed. It is now the location of the 'Fukutsu Mega Solar Power Plant' (福津メガソーラー発電所), a large-scale solar farm. All traces of the runway, taxiways, and aviation buildings have been removed, and the land is now covered with thousands of solar panels.

Historical Significance

Opened in April 1956, Tsuyazaki Airfield was an important general aviation hub in the Northern Kyushu region for over 30 years. It was operated by Nishi-Nippon Kūyu Co., Ltd. and served several key functions:

1. **Agricultural Aviation:** It was a major base for crop-dusting aircraft, serving the extensive farmlands of the Fukuoka Plain.
2. **Flight Training:** The airfield was used for training pilots on both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
3. **Aircraft Maintenance:** It functioned as a maintenance and operations base for the company's fleet.

For decades, it was a vital piece of infrastructure supporting the local agricultural economy and a center for developing regional aviation expertise.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Tsuyazaki Airfield. The land has been permanently and comprehensively converted for renewable energy production, making any return to aviation use infeasible.
