Approximately 2004
The airfield was closed due to the cessation of operations by the private club that managed it, the 'Yamaga Sky Sports Club' (山鹿スカイスポーツクラブ). The closure was a result of organizational and economic factors, as the recreational flying club's activities were no longer sustainable. It was not closed due to military conversion, a major accident, or government mandate.
The site of the former airfield has been completely repurposed. While the faint outline of the runway can still be seen on satellite imagery, it is now overgrown and serves as a local access road for agricultural vehicles. A significant portion of the former airfield land is now occupied by a large-scale solar farm, the 'Nagomi Town Kamiharada Solar Power Plant' (和水町上原田太陽光発電所). The surrounding area is used for agriculture and public recreation.
Yamaga Airfield, officially known as Yamaga Onsen Airfield (山鹿温泉飛行場) and also referred to as Kikuchi River Gliding Field (菊池川滑空場), was a private airfield established around April 1989. It was located on the flat riverbed plain of the Kikuchi River. Its sole purpose was to serve the local recreational aviation community. The airfield consisted of a simple, unpaved runway and was a hub for ultralight aircraft and gliders. It held no significance for commercial or military aviation and never handled scheduled passenger or cargo flights.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Yamaga Airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed for renewable energy generation (solar farm) and agriculture, making a return to aviation activities virtually impossible.
