August 1945
The airfield was closed following the end of World War II and the surrender of Japan. As a military installation built specifically for homeland defense, its purpose became obsolete. The subsequent demilitarization of Japan under Allied occupation ensured it would not be used again for military aviation.
The site has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible remnants of its past as an airfield. Since the 1970s, the land has been transformed into the Kochi Prefectural Haruno General Sports Park (高知県立春野総合運動公園). This large complex includes a major athletics stadium, a baseball stadium (used for spring training by the Saitama Seibu Lions professional baseball team), tennis courts, gymnasiums, and other public recreational facilities. The elongated layout of the park's main facilities roughly follows the orientation of the former runway.
The facility, known historically as Kochi #2 Airfield (高知第二飛行場) or Haruno Airfield (春野飛行場), was an Imperial Japanese Army Air Force base. Construction began late in World War II, around 1944, as part of Japan's desperate 'Kessen' (決戦 - Decisive Battle) preparations to defend against the anticipated Allied invasion of the home islands (Operation Downfall). Its primary role was to serve as a dispersal field for fighter interceptors tasked with engaging American B-29 bombers and to potentially launch 'special attack' (kamikaze) aircraft against an invasion fleet. Due to its late completion, it saw little to no significant combat operations before the war concluded. The name 'Kochi Auxiliary Airfield #2' and the ICAO code 'JP-1206' are not official historical designations. 'JP-1206' is a non-standard identifier, likely originating from a modern third-party database or flight simulator scenery package that catalogs historical airfields, rather than an official ICAO code.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this site as an airport. The land is now occupied by a major, permanent public sports complex and is surrounded by developed residential and agricultural areas. The aviation needs of the Kochi region are fully served by the nearby Kochi Ryoma Airport (IATA: KCZ, ICAO: RJOK).
