Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

August 1945

Reason for Closure

Military demilitarization following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. The base was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy and was formally decommissioned and abandoned after the war.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible, functional remnants of the airport. The distinct layout of the former runways and taxiways is now occupied by the Kamisu Nanamagari Solar Power Plant, a large-scale photovoltaic power station. The surrounding area is part of the extensive Kashima Rinkai Industrial Zone.

Historical Significance

The facility was officially known as Kōnoike Naval Air Base (神之池海軍航空隊 - Kōnoike Kaigun Kōkūtai); 'Gonoike' is an alternative or mistaken reading of the name. Established by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) around 1943, it was a major air base during World War II. Its primary role was as a training center for crews of land-based naval attack bombers, such as the Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty'. As the war progressed, it also became an operational base for the air defense of the Tokyo metropolitan area and was used for launching Kamikaze special attack missions in the final stages of the conflict. The base was heavily bombed by Allied forces in 1945 before its closure.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for industrial and renewable energy generation. There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening the site as an aviation facility.
