Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

March 31, 1998

Reason for Closure

The airfield was closed due to a combination of economic and urban development factors. The primary reason was a dramatic decrease in air traffic following the opening of the much larger New Chitose Airport in 1988, which absorbed most of the region's aviation demand. Concurrently, the area surrounding the airfield underwent significant urbanization, with the development of residential neighborhoods leading to increased noise complaints and making continued operations impractical.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. The main runway has been converted into a public city road named 'Kihoku-dori' (輝北通). The surrounding land that once housed hangars and support facilities has been repurposed into the 'Tomakomai Asahimachi Industrial Park' (苫小牧旭町工業団地), residential areas, and a large-scale solar farm known as the 'Tomakomai Asahimachi Solar Power Plant'. No original aviation infrastructure remains.

Historical Significance

Opened in 1964 and also known as Tomakomai Airfield, Asahimachi Airfield was a public airfield established and managed by the Hokkaido Prefectural Government. It served as a vital base for general aviation in the Tomakomai region for over three decades. Its operations were diverse, handling sightseeing flights, aerial photography missions, flight training schools, and agricultural aviation services such as crop dusting and pest control. It was a key operational base for regional carriers like Hokkaido Aviation (北海道航空). The facility featured a paved runway, initially 800 meters long, which was later extended to 1,000 meters to better support its activities.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed for industrial, residential, and renewable energy use. The complete redevelopment of the site makes any return to aviation activities infeasible.
