Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The airfield ceased active operations in the late 1990s or early 2000s. It was officially removed from the Japanese Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) on March 2, 2006, marking its official closure.

Reason for Closure

The closure was due to economic and operational reasons. The airfield, primarily known as the Urahoro Glider Port (浦幌グライダー滑空場), was operated by a private recreational club (Obihiro Glider Club). The cessation of activities was likely caused by factors common to such clubs, such as declining membership, aging participants, and the financial unsustainability of maintaining the site and equipment.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. Since approximately 2014, the land has been occupied by the 'Eurus Urahoro Solar Park' (ユーラス浦幌ソーラーパーク), a large-scale photovoltaic power plant. The flat, open expanse of the former airfield made it an ideal location for the installation of thousands of solar panels, which now cover the area of the former runway and surrounding grounds.

Historical Significance

Yoshino Airfield was not a commercial or military airport. Its significance was purely for recreational general aviation. Established around 1973, it served as the home base for the Obihiro Glider Club. The airfield featured a single unpaved, grass runway approximately 800 meters long and 50 meters wide (800x50m). For several decades, it was a key site for glider enthusiasts in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, used for glider launches (via winch or aerotow), training, and recreational flying.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for the airfield to reopen. The land has been permanently repurposed for industrial-scale renewable energy generation with the construction of the Eurus Urahoro Solar Park. The significant infrastructure investment in the solar farm makes any future conversion back to an airfield economically and logistically infeasible.
