Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Phased closure. The main land-based runway was officially abolished in March 1963. Remaining seaplane and heliport operations ceased by the early 1970s.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was obsolescence and the development of a larger, more modern airport for the region. Kizugawa Airfield was too small to handle the larger aircraft of the jet age and was constrained by the surrounding urban growth of Osaka, making expansion impossible. Air traffic was consolidated at the expanding Osaka International Airport (Itami), which became the primary airport for the city.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and bears no trace of its aviation past. It is now a bustling commercial and logistics area in the Tsuruhama district of Suminoe Ward, Osaka. The land is occupied by large-scale retail stores such as IKEA Tsuruhama and Tokyo Interior, the Osaka City Bus Tsuruhama Depot, and numerous warehouses and distribution centers.

Historical Significance

Kizugawa Airfield, originally known as Osaka Airfield (大阪飛行場), holds significant historical importance as Japan's first municipal airfield, opening in 1929. It was a pioneering facility designed to handle both land-based aircraft and seaplanes, which used the adjacent Kizugawa River. Before and during the early parts of World War II, it was the main airport serving the city of Osaka and a key hub for Japan Air Transport (日本航空輸送), a national carrier and a predecessor of modern Japan Airlines. During WWII, the airfield was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy for military operations. After the war, it was briefly used by US occupation forces before being returned to Japanese control.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land is fully developed with valuable commercial and industrial infrastructure. The Osaka metropolitan area is comprehensively served by two major airports: Osaka International Airport (Itami/RJOO) for domestic flights and Kansai International Airport (KIX/RJBB) for international and domestic flights. There is no need or feasibility for reopening an airfield at this location.
