The helipad was officially deleted from the Japanese Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) on April 22, 2010 (AIP-SUP NR 013/10). Commercial operations likely ceased in the period leading up to this date, around 2009-2010.
The closure was due to economic reasons. The helipad was a commercial venture primarily for tourism, and like many similar small heliports in Japan, it became economically unviable. This was caused by a combination of factors including the end of the 'bubble economy' boom, rising operational and fuel costs, and a general decline in demand for short-haul helicopter sightseeing tours.
The site has been completely repurposed. The land where the helipad once stood is now occupied by a solar power generation facility. A large array of ground-mounted solar panels, known as the 'Shimoda Tatado Solar Port' (下田多々戸ソーラーポート), now covers the former landing and parking area. The conversion from helipad to solar farm took place around 2015-2016.
Tatadohama Helipad was a commercial facility operated by Toho Air Service (東邦航空). Its primary function was to provide scenic helicopter flights for tourists visiting the popular Izu Peninsula. When active, it offered breathtaking aerial tours over the Shimoda coastline, Tatadohama Beach, and the surrounding dramatic landscapes. It was part of the local tourism infrastructure during the peak of Japan's domestic travel boom in the 1980s and 1990s, but it held no military or major logistical significance.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Tatadohama Helipad. The complete redevelopment of the site into a permanent solar farm makes a return to aviation use virtually impossible without the complete removal of the current infrastructure, which is highly unlikely.
