March 31, 2015. The official notice of abolishment (Notice No. 59) was issued by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) on March 26, 2015.
Economic reasons and declining usage. The airfield was a specific type of facility known as a 'Nōdō Rityakuriku-jō' (農道離着陸場), or 'Farm Road Airstrip'. These were built with government subsidies to revitalize rural areas. However, the Ogata airfield saw very little traffic in its later years, making the maintenance and operational costs an unsustainable financial burden for the local village government.
The site has been fully decommissioned and repurposed. The former runway is now a public road, officially designated as 'Sondō Nishi 2-gōsen' (Village Road West No. 2). It is an unusually wide, long, and straight road used for local and agricultural vehicle traffic. All airport-specific infrastructure, such as runway markings, lighting, and support buildings, has been removed.
Opened in April 1991, Ogata Auxiliary Airfield was built on land reclaimed from Lake Hachirōgata, a major agricultural project. Its primary purpose was to support agricultural aviation, including crop dusting, pest control, and aerial surveying for the vast surrounding rice paddies. It was also intended to promote general aviation, support light aircraft tourism, and serve as an emergency landing site. The facility consisted of a single paved runway approximately 800 meters (2,625 feet) long, designed for small propeller aircraft like Cessnas and agricultural planes. It was part of a broader national initiative in the late 1980s and early 1990s to build a network of such airstrips in rural Japan.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The official abolishment by the JCAB, the conversion of the infrastructure into a public road, and the persistent economic factors that led to its closure make any revival extremely unlikely.
