Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2007-2008. The airfield was officially removed from Japan's Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) in 2008, following the dissolution of its primary operating club in 2007.

Reason for Closure

Economic and operational reasons. The closure was a direct result of the dissolution of the 'Yamagata Sky Sports Club', the main entity that operated and managed the airfield. This suggests the facility was no longer financially viable due to factors such as declining membership, rising operational costs, or a lack of sustainable activity.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely repurposed and is now occupied by the 'Obanazawa Tamanohara Solar Power Plant' (尾花沢市玉原太陽光発電所). A large-scale solar farm has been constructed over the former runway and surrounding land. All aviation-related infrastructure has been removed, and the land is now used for renewable energy generation.

Historical Significance

Opened in July 1989, Tamanohara Airfield was a private, non-public airfield (known in Japan as a 場外離着陸場, jōgai richakuriku-jō). It was a key site for recreational aviation in the Yamagata Prefecture. Its primary function was to support general aviation activities, including ultralight aircraft (ULP), motor gliders, and skydiving. The airfield featured a single unpaved grass runway, approximately 500 meters long and 30 meters wide, and served as a base for local aviation enthusiasts.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening Tamanohara Airfield. The long-term commitment of the land to a large-scale solar power generation facility makes its return to aviation use virtually impossible.
