Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2010-2011. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airfield was intact and operational in early 2010, but by mid-2011, construction of a solar farm was underway on the runway, indicating the airfield had ceased operations in that timeframe.

Reason for Closure

Economic redevelopment. The primary reason for the closure was the sale and conversion of the land for a more profitable use. The site was redeveloped into a large-scale solar power plant, a common trend for flat, open land in Japan during that period. The closure was not due to military conversion, a specific accident, or lack of demand from the aviation community it served.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield is no longer recognizable as an aviation facility. It has been completely repurposed and is now occupied by the 'Hokota Daiichi Solar Port', a large-scale solar power generation plant. The runway, taxiways, and any associated buildings like hangars have been demolished and replaced by extensive arrays of photovoltaic panels.

Historical Significance

Hokota (Toyokashima) Airfield was a privately owned and operated general aviation facility, officially classified as a 'jōgai richakuriku-jō' (off-airfield landing site). It featured an unpaved, 800-meter grass runway (01/19) and served the recreational flying community in the Kanto region. Operations primarily consisted of ultralight aircraft, light sport aircraft, and other private planes. It was a local hub for flight training and recreational aviation, holding no strategic military or commercial passenger transport significance.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been fundamentally and permanently altered for long-term industrial use as a solar farm. Reverting the site to an airfield would require the complete decommissioning and removal of the power plant, making it economically and logistically infeasible.
