August 1945
The airfield was closed following the end of World War II and the surrender of Japan. As an Imperial Japanese Army Air Service base, its military purpose ceased with the dissolution of the Japanese military. The site was subsequently occupied by Allied forces and later returned to the Japanese government for redevelopment.
The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integrated part of the urban landscape of Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture. The area is occupied by the Koshigaya Distribution Center (Koshigaya Ryūtsū Danchi), Shirakobato Athletic Park, and extensive residential and commercial zones. There are no visible remnants of the runways or airfield structures, though several historical monuments and information boards have been erected in the area (such as in Shirakobato Park) to commemorate the site's history.
Koshigaya Army Airfield (越谷陸軍飛行場, Koshigaya Rikugun Hikōjō) was a key Imperial Japanese Army Air Service base constructed in 1943 during World War II. Its primary mission was the air defense of the Tokyo metropolitan area. It housed fighter units, notably the 53rd Air Regiment of the 10th Air Division, which operated Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu 'Nick' twin-engine fighters to intercept Allied B-29 bomber raids. Towards the end of the war, the airfield was also used for training special attack (kamikaze) units, including the Shinten Seikutai (振武隊). It was a frequent target of Allied bombing in 1945 before its operations ceased with the end of the war.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The site is now a densely populated and developed urban area, making any form of aviation activity impossible. The land has been permanently repurposed.
