August 1945
The aerodrome was closed following the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. The Nakajima Aircraft Company was dissolved by the Allied occupation forces, and its military production facilities, including the Handa plant and its associated airfield, were decommissioned as part of Japan's post-war demilitarization.
The site of the former aerodrome and factory has been completely redeveloped into a major industrial park. The original runway no longer exists. A significant portion of the land is now occupied by the Handa Plant of Subaru Corporation (formerly Fuji Heavy Industries), the corporate successor to the Nakajima Aircraft Company. This plant continues the site's aerospace legacy by manufacturing major components, such as central wing boxes, for commercial airliners like the Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner.
The aerodrome was the factory airfield for the Nakajima Aircraft Company's Handa Plant, a critical facility for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. The plant produced advanced aircraft, and the aerodrome was used for test flights and the delivery of newly manufactured planes. Notable aircraft associated with this site include the Nakajima C6N 'Saiun' reconnaissance aircraft, the Nakajima J1N 'Gekko' night fighter, and the experimental Nakajima Kikka jet fighter. Due to its strategic importance, the facility was a primary target for Allied bombing raids in 1944 and 1945.
None. The site has been fully repurposed for industrial manufacturing and is surrounded by urban development. The region's aviation needs are served by the nearby Chubu Centrair International Airport (RJGG), making the reopening of this historic airfield unfeasible and unnecessary.
