Approximately 2010-2011
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The site was decommissioned to allow for the construction of a large-scale solar energy park, which was considered a more economically viable use for the land.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the 'Parco Fotovoltaico di Mantova', a large solar farm. The entire area that once housed the runway, taxiways, and aprons is now covered with thousands of solar panels. The faint outline of the former main runway is still visible on satellite imagery beneath the panel arrays.
The airport, commonly known as 'Aeroporto di Mantova-Migliaretto', was not a commercial airport for scheduled passenger flights. Its primary role was as a general aviation airfield ('aviosuperficie' in Italian). It was the home of the Aero Club di Mantova and served as a hub for private pilots, flight training, recreational flying, gliding, and ultralight aircraft. It played a significant role in the local aviation community for several decades, fostering interest and training in aviation for the Mantova province.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport at this location. The construction of the permanent and extensive solar park infrastructure makes a return to aviation activities infeasible. The land has been permanently repurposed for renewable energy generation.
