Approximately late 2008 to early 2009. The closure was finalized following the approval of a new municipal development plan ('Piano Particolareggiato') in 2008 which rezoned the land for commercial use.
The primary reason for the closure was extensive urban and commercial development. The airfield was situated on prime real estate adjacent to a major highway interchange (A4/A57) and the existing Valecenter shopping mall. The land was acquired and redeveloped to expand the 'Parco Commerciale Marcon', as it was considered far more valuable for retail and commercial purposes than for recreational aviation.
The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. The former runway, hangars, and clubhouse have been demolished. The land is now occupied by a large, modern retail park, which is an extension of the adjacent commercial area. Buildings for major retailers like Leroy Merlin and Decathlon, along with extensive parking lots and new access roads, now stand where the airfield once was.
Marcon Airfield was an 'aviosuperficie', a type of small airfield common in Italy for non-commercial aviation. It was a vital hub for the general aviation and ultralight (ULM) community in the Venice-Mestre metropolitan area. The airfield was home to the 'Associazione Volo Club Jonathan', a prominent flying club that offered flight training and facilities for private pilots. It featured a grass runway (approximately 600-700 meters long) and served as a key social and operational base for local aviation enthusiasts for many years.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-density commercial use, making any return to aviation activities physically impossible. The 'Volo Club Jonathan', which operated from the airfield, relocated to the airfield in Caorle (LIPV) after the closure of the Marcon site.
