The airfield was permanently closed due to land redevelopment. The site was sold and converted for industrial use, specifically for the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar farm). This represents a closure for economic and land-use conversion reasons.
The site is now occupied by a large solar farm. The entire area of the former runway, taxiways, and surrounding grounds has been covered with thousands of photovoltaic panels. The original aviation infrastructure has been dismantled and removed to accommodate the power plant. The outline of the former runway is still faintly visible in some satellite imagery beneath the solar panel arrays. The facility is a fully operational power generation plant.
Venosa Airfield, officially known as 'Aviosuperficie Orazio Flacco', was a private airfield serving the general aviation community. Its name honored the famous Roman poet Horace, who was born in ancient Venusia (modern Venosa). The airfield was primarily used for recreational flying, including ultralight aircraft and other light general aviation planes. It served as a local hub for private pilots and aviation enthusiasts in the Basilicata region, but it did not handle any commercial or significant military operations. Its ICAO code, IT-0642, was an unofficial identifier used in some databases for small Italian airfields.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The conversion to a major industrial solar farm is a permanent change of use for the land. Re-establishing an airfield would require the complete removal of the multi-million euro power plant, making any such prospect economically and logistically unfeasible.
