Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 2012 and 2014. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was clear and intact in 2012, but a large industrial/agricultural building had been constructed on its southern end by 2014, definitively ending its use as an airfield.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and a change in land use. The airfield was a private facility ('aviosuperficie'). The construction of a large, permanent building complex directly on the runway indicates a deliberate decision by the owner to repurpose the land for more profitable industrial or agricultural activities, which are prevalent in the region.

Current Status

The site is no longer an airfield and is permanently closed to all aviation. A large industrial or agricultural processing facility has been built over the southern portion of the former runway. The remaining sections of the paved runway are in a state of decay, with vegetation growing through cracks, and are used as access roads for the facility. The hangars appear to be repurposed for storage or other industrial uses.

Historical Significance

Triolo Airfield, known locally as 'Aviosuperficie Triolo' or 'Campo di Volo Triolo', was a privately owned and operated airfield. It was not a commercial or military airport. Its primary role was to serve the general aviation and ultralight (ULM) flying community in the San Severo area and the broader Province of Foggia. It was a notable facility for local recreational pilots and private aircraft owners, featuring a paved runway of approximately 800 meters.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Triolo Airfield. The presence of a significant and permanent industrial structure built directly on the runway makes any potential reopening financially unfeasible and practically impossible without major demolition and reconstruction.
