Approximately 2010-2011. The exact date is not publicly documented, but the closure coincides with the planning and construction of a large-scale solar farm on the site, which began around this period.
Economic reasons and land repurposing. The site was sold and redeveloped to host the 'Torretto Photovoltaic Plant'. The land became more economically valuable as a solar energy generation site than as a private general aviation airfield, a common trend for smaller airfields in areas with high solar potential like the Puglia region.
The site is no longer an airfield. The former runway, taxiways, and surrounding land have been completely converted into a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar farm). Satellite imagery clearly shows solar panels covering the entire length of the former runway. Some of the original airfield buildings, such as hangars, may still exist on the periphery of the property, likely repurposed for maintenance and operations of the solar facility.
Torretto Airfield was a modern, post-war private airfield (known as an 'aviosuperficie' in Italian). It was not a major commercial or military airport and holds no known major historical significance from events like WWII (unlike other former airfields in the Foggia province). Its primary function was to serve the local general aviation community, including ultralight aircraft, private pilots, and potentially some agricultural aviation activities. It operated with a single paved runway (approximately 800-900 meters long) and basic hangar and support facilities.
Effectively zero. The permanent installation of a multi-megawatt solar farm directly on the airfield's primary infrastructure (the runway) makes any prospect of reopening as an aviation facility economically and logistically unfeasible. The land has been permanently repurposed for renewable energy generation.
