Approximately 2011-2012. The final approvals for the site's redevelopment were granted in 2011, and by 2013, satellite imagery shows the new construction had replaced the airfield.
Economic and land redevelopment. The airfield was permanently closed to facilitate the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar farm). The land was repurposed from aviation use to renewable energy production.
The site of the former airfield is now completely occupied by the 'Martifer-Vasto' solar farm. The entire runway and all associated aviation infrastructure have been removed and replaced by thousands of solar panels. The location is now an industrial power generation site and is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
Sinello Airfield, known in Italian as 'Aviosuperficie del Sinello', was a private airfield primarily serving the general aviation community in the Vasto and Abruzzo region. Its main operations included:
- **Recreational Flying:** It was a base for local pilots and aviation enthusiasts, particularly for ultralight aircraft (known as ULM or VDS in Italy).
- **Flight Training:** The airfield was used by local flying clubs for flight instruction.
- **Tourism:** It supported aerial tourism, offering flights over the scenic Trabocchi Coast and the surrounding countryside.
The facility consisted of a single unpaved (grass/dirt) runway, approximately 800-900 meters in length, and a few small buildings or hangars for aircraft storage and club activities.
Effectively zero. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Sinello Airfield. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for industrial use. Re-establishing an airfield would require the acquisition and complete dismantlement of the existing multi-million euro solar farm, making it economically and logistically unfeasible.
