Land redevelopment for the construction of a photovoltaic (solar) power plant. The land was repurposed for renewable energy generation, a more profitable use of the large, flat, sun-exposed area than a small private airfield.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by a large-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic power plant. The runway, taxiways, and any associated aviation buildings have been entirely removed to make way for extensive rows of solar panels. The land is no longer recognizable as an airfield and is used exclusively for energy production.
Pantanella Airfield, known in Italian as 'Aviosuperficie Pantanella', was a small airfield primarily serving the general aviation and ultralight (VDS - Volo da Diporto o Sportivo) communities. It was not a commercial or major military airport. Its significance was local, providing a base for recreational flying, pilot training, and private aircraft for the Manfredonia and Gargano peninsula area. It featured a single unpaved runway and basic facilities, typical of fields used by flying clubs and private owners for hobbyist aviation.
Effectively zero. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The complete conversion of the site into a large, operational solar power plant represents a significant, long-term capital investment. A return to aviation use is highly improbable, as it would require the costly decommissioning and removal of the entire energy infrastructure.
