Approximately 2014-2015. While an exact official date is not readily available, analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a clear, maintained runway visible until around 2014. By late 2015 and into 2016, the site was undergoing significant construction, indicating the airfield had ceased operations by then.
Economic and land-use conversion. The primary reason for the closure was the sale and redevelopment of the land for the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic (solar) power plant. This type of land conversion is common for flat, open areas previously used as small airfields.
The site is now fully occupied by the 'Parco Fotovoltaico Cutrofiano', a large solar farm. The runway, taxiways, and any small hangars or buildings associated with the airfield have been completely removed and replaced by rows of solar panels and related power infrastructure. The land's purpose has been permanently converted from aviation to renewable energy production.
The 'Campo di volo di Cutrofiano' was a small, private airfield, technically classified as an 'aviosuperficie' in Italy. It was not a commercial airport and held no major historical significance in a national or military context. Its importance was local, serving the general aviation community of the Salento peninsula. Operations primarily consisted of recreational flying, ultralight aircraft (ULM), and potentially some flight training. It featured a single unpaved/grass runway, estimated to be around 800 meters long, suitable for light aircraft.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The construction of the solar farm is a permanent, high-investment development that makes a return to aviation activities at this location virtually impossible. The land is no longer suitable for use as an airfield.
