Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2012-2013. The airfield ceased operations to make way for new construction which began around that period.

Reason for Closure

Urban and commercial development. The land on which the airfield was located was re-zoned and sold for the construction of a large retail complex. This is a common fate for smaller airfields located on the outskirts of growing towns.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped. The former runway and airfield facilities have been demolished and are now occupied by the 'Centro Commerciale Coop Venturina', a large supermarket and shopping center, along with its extensive parking lot. There are no remaining physical traces of the airfield.

Historical Significance

Campiglia Airfield, also known as 'Aviosuperficie Albatros', was a private ultralight airfield ('aviosuperficie' in Italian). It was not a commercial airport and had no IATA code. Its ICAO designator, IT-0441, was assigned within the Italian system for general aviation and recreational airfields. The airfield featured a single grass runway (approximately 02/20) and was primarily used by the local 'Aero Club Albatros'. Operations consisted of recreational flying, flight training for ultralight aircraft (ULM), and general aviation activities for the local community and visiting pilots. It served as a key hub for aviation enthusiasts in the Val di Cornia region.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site has been permanently and irreversibly converted to commercial use. The construction of the large retail complex on the exact location of the former runway makes any prospect of reopening the airfield physically impossible.
