Approximately May 2012. The airfield ceased operations immediately following the major earthquakes that struck the Emilia region.
The airfield was permanently closed due to catastrophic damage sustained during the 2012 Emilia earthquake. The seismic events, with epicenters very close to San Possidonio, destroyed hangars and other essential infrastructure, rendering the site unsafe and inoperable. The extensive damage and the prohibitive cost of rebuilding led to its definitive closure.
The site has been completely repurposed. The former grass runway and surrounding airfield grounds are now occupied by a large ground-mounted solar power plant (photovoltaic park). All original aviation infrastructure has been removed to make way for this renewable energy project.
Deltaland Airfield was an 'aviosuperficie,' a type of light aircraft airstrip common in Italy. It served the local general aviation and recreational flying community in the province of Modena. Its primary operations included flight training, private flights for ultralight (ULM) and general aviation aircraft, and it was the base for a local flying club. It functioned as a small but important hub for aviation enthusiasts in the area but had no scheduled commercial or military significance.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The conversion of the land into a permanent industrial installation (a solar farm) makes the possibility of it ever returning to aviation use effectively zero, as it would require the complete removal of the power plant and a full reconstruction of the airfield.
