Approximately 2012-2013. The airfield ceased operations and was officially removed from aviation registers around this period as the land was redeveloped.
Economic and land redevelopment. The private airfield was located on valuable coastal land. The property was sold and subsequently redeveloped into a large-scale tourist resort complex, making its function as an airfield obsolete.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by the 'Poggio all'Agnello Holiday Resort,' a large tourist complex with apartments, swimming pools, and sports facilities. Satellite imagery clearly shows the resort built directly over the former runway and taxiway areas, leaving no trace of the original airfield infrastructure.
Condor Airfield, also known locally as Aviosuperficie di Piombino, was a private general aviation airfield. It was not a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger flights. Its primary role was to serve the local general aviation community, including private pilots, flying clubs, and flight training activities. It was strategically important for tourism, offering a convenient landing spot for small private aircraft visiting the Etruscan Coast and providing an alternative mainland access point for the nearby Island of Elba. The airfield typically handled ultralights, single-engine, and twin-engine propeller aircraft.
There are zero prospects for reopening the original Condor Airfield, as the site is now a permanent resort. However, for many years there has been a separate, highly debated, and controversial project to build a new, much larger airport in the Piombino area (at a different location). This proposed 'Aeroporto della Maremma' or 'Piombino-Elba Airport' was intended to serve as a major tourist gateway to the region and the Island of Elba. The project has been stalled for years due to significant environmental opposition (due to its proximity to the Sterpaia Coastal Park), questions about its economic viability, and political hurdles. As of the early 2020s, the project remains largely on paper with no definitive timeline for construction.
