Approximately 2010-2011. The exact date is not officially recorded, but discussions in Italian aviation forums from late 2011 and early 2012 already refer to the airfield as having been closed for some time.
The specific official reason for the closure is not publicly documented, which is common for small, privately-owned airfields. The closure was most likely due to a combination of economic factors, such as declining activity, high operational and maintenance costs, and/or a decision by the landowner to repurpose the land for a more profitable use (agriculture).
The airfield is permanently closed and no longer exists for aviation purposes. Analysis of recent satellite imagery shows that the land has been fully converted to agricultural use. The distinct outline of the former runway is still visible, but the surface is now cultivated and used for farming, likely for growing hay or other crops. The hangars and clubhouse buildings at the southwest end of the former strip appear to be extant but are likely used for agricultural storage or are in a state of disuse.
I Grifoni Airfield was a private 'aviosuperficie', a category of airfield in Italy intended for general aviation, recreational flying, and particularly ultralight aircraft (known as VDS/ULM in Italy). It featured a single grass runway, approximately 600 meters long with a 05/23 orientation. The airfield was a local hub for the 'I Grifoni' flying club, serving pilots and aviation enthusiasts from the surrounding Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It never handled commercial, cargo, or military operations, functioning solely as a base for private recreational flight.
There are no known plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening I Grifoni Airfield. Given that the site has been closed for over a decade and the land has been fully integrated into agricultural operations, a return to aviation use is considered extremely unlikely. Re-establishing an airfield would require significant private investment, new certifications from the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), and the landowner's willingness to convert the land back from its current profitable use.
