Approximately late 2011 to early 2012. The final decision to close the airfield was made in late 2011, paving the way for redevelopment projects that began in 2012.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airfield was permanently closed to allow for the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar farm) on its grounds. The prime location of the land was repurposed for renewable energy production rather than aviation.
The site of the former airfield has been completely transformed and is no longer recognizable as an aviation facility. It is now occupied by a large photovoltaic power plant, covering the entire area where the runway and hangars once stood. All aviation infrastructure has been dismantled and replaced by solar panels.
Dedalo Airfield was a private 'aviosuperficie' (a type of airfield in Italy for general and recreational aviation) primarily used for general aviation, ultralight aircraft (ULM), and tourist flights. It featured a grass runway approximately 800 meters long. The airfield was home to the 'Club Avioturistico Dedalo' and was a significant hub for recreational pilots in the region. Its strategic location near the prestigious Marina di Scarlino and the Tuscan coast made it a popular departure point for scenic flights over the coastline and the Tuscan Archipelago, including the island of Elba.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Dedalo Airfield. The land has been permanently and fundamentally repurposed for industrial-scale energy generation. Reverting the site to an airfield would require the acquisition and complete removal of the multi-million euro solar farm, making it economically and logistically infeasible.
