Late October 2016
The closure was primarily due to the non-renewal of the land lease agreement between the flying club that operated the airfield, 'Volo Club Ali sul Graticolato', and the private landowner. This was compounded by several contributing factors, including significant economic difficulties with rising management costs, increasing bureaucratic hurdles for general aviation operations in Italy, and a perceived lack of support from the local municipal administration.
The site has been completely decommissioned and fully returned to agricultural use. Satellite imagery confirms that the grass runway has been plowed over and is now indistinguishable from the surrounding farmland. While some of the original buildings, such as the hangar and clubhouse, may still be standing, the land itself no longer functions as an airfield in any capacity.
Ali sul Graticolato was a small but locally important airfield ('aviosuperficie' in Italian) dedicated to general and recreational aviation. For approximately 20 years (c. 1996-2016), it served as the home base for the 'Volo Club Ali sul Graticolato'. Its primary operations included:
- A flight school for ultralight aircraft (VDS - Volo da Diporto o Sportivo).
- Recreational flying for club members and private pilots.
- Hangarage and maintenance facilities for ultralight aircraft.
- Hosting local aviation events, fly-ins, and community gatherings.
The name 'sul Graticolato' is historically significant, referring to the 'Graticolato Romano', the ancient Roman grid system of land division (centuriation) that is still visible in the agricultural landscape of this region, northeast of Padua. The airfield was a hub for the local aviation community and played a role in promoting recreational flying in the Veneto region.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Ali sul Graticolato Airfield at its original location. Given that the primary reason for closure was the termination of the land lease and the subsequent conversion of the land back to agriculture, reopening at this site is highly improbable. The operating club, Volo Club Ali sul Graticolato, appears to have disbanded following the closure, and there have been no public announcements regarding a relocation or re-establishment of the airfield elsewhere.
