The airfield ceased aviation operations around 2012-2014. The final, irreversible closure occurred with the construction of a solar farm on the site, which began around 2019.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airfield, like many small general aviation fields, likely faced declining activity and rising operational costs. The landowner ultimately chose to sell or lease the land for a more profitable venture, leading to its conversion into a photovoltaic park.
The site of the former Il Gabbione Airfield has been completely repurposed. It is now occupied by a large ground-mounted photovoltaic power plant (a solar farm). All traces of the runway, taxiways, and aviation hangars have been removed to accommodate the solar panels and related infrastructure. The land is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
Il Gabbione was a local general aviation airfield (aviosuperficie) primarily serving the recreational flying community of the Lugo and Ravenna area. It was operated by the 'Aeroclub di Lugo'. Its main operations included:
- **Flight School:** Training for private pilot licenses (PPL) and ultralight aircraft (VDS - Volo da Diporto o Sportivo).
- **Recreational Flying:** A base for local pilots and aircraft owners.
- **Ultralight and GA Aircraft:** The airfield featured a single grass runway (approximately 02/20) around 800 meters long, suitable for light single-engine aircraft and ultralights.
It did not have major commercial or military significance but was an important hub for local aviation enthusiasts for several decades.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The construction of the large-scale solar farm on the property represents a permanent and definitive change in land use. Re-establishing an airfield would require the acquisition of the land, the complete removal of the multi-million euro photovoltaic plant, and rebuilding all aviation infrastructure from scratch, making it economically and logistically infeasible.
