Approximately late 2000s, likely between 2008 and 2011. The airfield was confirmed to be permanently closed by 2012 when official plans for the site's redevelopment were published.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The private airfield was closed to allow for a more profitable use of the land. There is no evidence of closure due to a major accident or military conversion.
The site has been completely redeveloped into a large-scale solar power plant. The entire area of the former runway and associated grounds is now covered by the 'Parco Fotovoltaico di Medicina - Villa Fontana', a photovoltaic farm that generates renewable energy. All aviation-related infrastructure has been removed.
Known as 'Aviosuperficie Villa Fontana', it was a private general aviation airfield that served the Bologna metropolitan area. It was primarily used for recreational flying, including ultralight aircraft (known in Italy as VDS - Volo da Diporto o Sportivo) and gliding. For a period, it was a key location for the Aero Club Volo a Vela di Bologna (Bologna Gliding Club). The airfield featured a grass runway approximately 800-900 meters in length and served as a local hub for flight training and private aviation enthusiasts, complementing the larger commercial Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (LIPE / BLQ).
Effectively zero. The permanent and extensive conversion of the land into an industrial power generation facility makes reopening the site as an airfield practically and economically infeasible. There are no known plans or prospects for its return to aviation use.
