Approximately between 2009 and 2011. Satellite imagery shows the grass runway was still intact in 2008 but significant construction for a new logistics park was underway by 2012. Aviation community discussions from 2011 already referred to the airfield as closed.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The land occupied by the airfield was sold and redeveloped into a large-scale industrial and logistics park. This is a common fate for smaller airfields located in economically developing areas where land value for industrial or residential use surpasses its value for general aviation.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as a former airfield. The land is now occupied by the 'Polo Logistico Kering', a massive logistics and distribution center for the Kering luxury group (owner of brands like Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Bottega Veneta). The entire area of the former runway and hangars is now covered by large warehouses, parking lots, and access roads. The primary address for the new facility is on Via Tevere, Rovellasca. Note: The airfield was located in the municipality of Rovellasca, which is in the Province of Como (CO), not Monza and Brianza (MB).
Campo di Volo Rovellasca was an 'Aviosuperficie', a type of Italian airfield primarily used for recreational and sport aviation. It was a local hub for general aviation, particularly for ultralight aircraft (ULM). The airfield was operated by the 'Aero Club Rovellasca' and featured a single grass runway (approximately 18/36) around 650 meters in length. Its significance was not national or military, but rather as a vital local facility for flight training, private pilots, and aviation enthusiasts in the densely populated region between Como and Milan.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The complete and permanent redevelopment of the site into a major, operational logistics hub makes a return to aviation use impossible. The land has been irrevocably repurposed.
