Approximately 2010. The airfield ceased operations around this time as the land was slated for redevelopment. The final closure was formalized with the expiration of the management agreement between the land owner and the operating aero club.
Economic and urban development. The primary reason for the closure was the sale and planned redevelopment of the land. The area was designated by the city of Imola for a new industrial and logistics park. The closure was not due to an accident or military conversion but was a strategic decision to repurpose the real estate for commercial growth.
The site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The runway, hangars, and all aviation facilities have been demolished. The land is now occupied by a large, modern industrial park. The most prominent occupant is the global headquarters of Cefla, a major multinational industrial group based in Imola. In a tribute to the site's past, the main road running through the new development is named 'Via Elio Zambrini'.
Named in memory of Elio Zambrini, a local pilot from Imola who died in a flying accident in 1991, the airfield was a vital hub for general aviation in the region. As an 'aviosuperficie,' it primarily served recreational and sport aviation. Operations included private light aircraft, ultralights (ULM), flight school training, and a popular parachuting/skydiving center. It was managed by the historic Aero Club 'Francesco Baracca' of Lugo. Its location adjacent to the famous Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari also made it a convenient landing spot for helicopters and light aircraft carrying VIPs, drivers, and team personnel during major motorsport events.
Zero. The complete and permanent redevelopment of the original site with large-scale industrial buildings makes reopening the airfield at this location impossible. There are no known or credible plans to re-establish the Elio Zambrini Airfield at a new location.
