The airfield officially ceased all operations at the end of March 2012.
The primary reason for the closure was the non-renewal of the land lease agreement. The private owner of the land decided not to extend the contract with the airfield's operating association, choosing instead to reclaim the property for agricultural use. Despite efforts by the association, a new agreement could not be reached, forcing the airfield to shut down.
The site of the former airfield has been completely reverted to its intended agricultural purpose. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the land is now a large, cultivated farm field. All traces of the runway, taxiways, and any associated buildings like hangars or a clubhouse have been removed. The area is indistinguishable from the surrounding farmland.
Villa Farsetti Airfield was an 'aviosuperficie', a type of airfield in Italy designated for general and recreational aviation. For approximately 20 years (from the early 1990s to 2012), it was a significant hub for the local aviation community in the Venice mainland area. Operated by the amateur sports association 'A.S. Volo al Veneto', it primarily served ultralight aircraft (known in Italy as VDS - Volo da Diporto o Sportivo) and general aviation pilots. The airfield featured a 650-meter grass runway (02/20) and facilities that included a flight school. It was a social and training center for many local pilots and enthusiasts. Its name was derived from its close proximity to the famous 18th-century Villa Farsetti, a major historical landmark in Santa Maria di Sala.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Villa Farsetti Airfield. The land has been actively farmed by its private owner for over a decade, and the original operating association has long since disbanded. The complete removal of all aviation infrastructure and the site's return to agriculture make any future reopening at this location extremely unlikely.
