Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2012. While an exact official date is not widely published, aviation community discussions and historical satellite imagery show that flight operations ceased around 2011-2012, with ground-breaking for new construction evident by 2013.

Reason for Closure

Economic and Urban Development. The primary reason for the closure was the sale of the land for commercial and industrial redevelopment. The airfield was located in a strategic, high-value area near the A8 and A9 motorways, making it prime real estate. The land was acquired for the development of the 'Lainate Business Park', a large-scale logistics and commercial hub.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. The runway, hangars, and clubhouse have been demolished. The land is now occupied by the Lainate Business Park, which hosts large logistics centers, warehouses, and corporate offices for various companies, including the developer Prologis. Satellite imagery clearly shows massive industrial buildings covering the exact footprint of the former runway and surrounding grounds.

Historical Significance

Aviosuperficie Airone was a vital general aviation hub for the northern Milan metropolitan area. It was not a commercial airport but a 'campo di volo' (airfield) primarily serving private pilots, recreational flyers, and flight training. It was operated by the Associazione Sportiva Airone. The airfield featured a single grass runway (approximately 650 meters long) and was a popular base for ultralight (ULM) and light sport aircraft. For decades, it provided a crucial space for the local aviation community in a densely populated and industrialized region where such open spaces are rare.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are zero prospects for the airfield to reopen. The land has been permanently repurposed for large-scale industrial and commercial use. The construction of the business park makes any future aviation activity at this specific location impossible.
