Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The primary reason for the permanent closure was the conversion of the land into a large-scale ground-mounted solar farm (parco fotovoltaico). This change in land use made aviation activities impossible.
The site of the former airfield is now occupied by a large solar farm. Satellite imagery clearly shows that the entire length of the former grass/dirt runway and adjacent areas are covered with rows of photovoltaic panels. Some of the original buildings, which may have been hangars or a clubhouse, might still exist at the edge of the solar park, but the aviation infrastructure itself is gone. The land is dedicated to renewable energy production.
Icaro Village Airfield was a private 'aviosuperficie,' a type of small airfield in Italy primarily serving general aviation. It was a significant local hub for recreational and sport aviation in the Province of Ferrara. Operations mainly consisted of:
- Ultralight (ULM) aircraft flights
- General aviation light aircraft operations
- Flight training and introductory flights
- A base for local pilots and aviation enthusiasts
It was not a commercial airport and had no scheduled passenger or cargo services. Its importance was rooted in the local aviation community it supported, providing a facility for hobbyists and private pilots.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The construction of the extensive and permanent solar energy infrastructure on the property makes a return to aviation activities functionally impossible. The investment in the solar farm and its role in energy production represent a long-term, definitive change in the site's purpose.
