Approximately 2011-2012. The airfield was still listed as active in official documents from 2007, but satellite imagery from 2012-2013 clearly shows the runway area being plowed and converted to farmland.
The closure was primarily due to land use and economic factors. The land on which the airfield operated was returned to its primary agricultural purpose. The local flying club that managed the site, A.S.D. Volo Club Cherasco, ceased its operations there. There is no indication that the closure was caused by a specific accident, regulatory action, or military conversion.
The site has been completely decommissioned and fully reverted to agricultural use. The former runway and taxiways are no longer visible and have been integrated into the surrounding cultivated fields. All aviation-related infrastructure, such as runway markers and potential small hangars, has been removed. The land is now indistinguishable from the adjacent farmland.
Malabaila Airfield was an 'aviosuperficie', a type of small civil airfield in Italy designed for general aviation and recreational flying. It was the home base for the A.S.D. Volo Club Cherasco. The airfield primarily handled ultralight aircraft, motor gliders, and other light general aviation planes. Its significance was local, serving as a key facility for private pilots and aviation enthusiasts in the Cuneo province. It featured a single grass runway (designated 02/20) with a length of approximately 650 meters.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Malabaila Airfield. Given that the land has been actively farmed for over a decade and the original operating club is no longer present, the legal, financial, and logistical barriers to re-establishing an airfield at this location are considered insurmountable. The site is expected to remain agricultural land.
