Approximately 2013-2014. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airfield was intact and appeared usable through 2013. By 2015-2016, construction of a large industrial facility was well underway on the site, indicating the airfield ceased operations in the intervening period.
Land redevelopment for industrial use. The airfield was permanently closed and dismantled to allow for the construction of the Mercure Cosenza Biomass Power Plant, which now occupies the entire former site of the runway and associated buildings.
The site is now fully occupied by the Mercure Cosenza Biomass Power Plant, operated by Biomasse Cosenza S.r.l., a subsidiary of the Veolia Group. All aviation infrastructure, including the runway, taxiways, and hangars, has been completely demolished and replaced by the industrial power plant and its associated storage and processing facilities.
Known as 'Aviosuperficie di Cosenza', this was the primary general aviation (GA) facility for the city and province of Cosenza. It featured a paved asphalt runway approximately 850 meters (2,800 feet) in length. The airfield was a vital hub for the local aviation community, serving private pilots, flight training schools (including ultralight/ULM aircraft), and recreational flying. Its closure left a significant void for GA activities in the immediate Cosenza area.
None. The site has been irreversibly and permanently redeveloped for a major industrial purpose. There are no plans, and no physical possibility, of reopening the airfield at this location. Any future aviation facility for the Cosenza area would require a new site.
