Approximately 2018-2019. The airfield was still visible and appeared usable in satellite imagery from 2018. By 2020, construction for a new hotel building had commenced on the southern portion of the former runway, indicating the airport had ceased operations by that time.
Land redevelopment for tourism. The airport was situated on prime real estate directly adjacent to the main Geysir geothermal tourist area and the expanding Hotel Geysir complex. The land was repurposed to accommodate the hotel's expansion, making the continued operation of the airstrip unfeasible. The economic value of the land for tourism infrastructure surpassed its value as a private airfield.
The site is permanently closed and is no longer used for any aviation activities. The southern end of the former runway is now occupied by a new building belonging to the Hotel Geysir complex. The remainder of the land that formed the runway is now an open grass field that has been integrated into the hotel's surrounding landscape. While the faint outline of the old runway is still visible from the air, it is not maintained and is obstructed by the new construction.
Geysir Airport was a small, private airstrip with a single gravel runway, primarily serving the tourism and general aviation sectors. Its strategic location made it a key asset for sightseeing flight operators offering aerial tours of Iceland's famous 'Golden Circle' route, which includes the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, and Ăingvellir National Park. The airport allowed small charter and private aircraft (such as Cessnas and Pipers) to bring tourists directly to the site and provided a base for breathtaking scenic flights. It offered a convenient, albeit basic, landing facility for private pilots visiting one of Iceland's most popular natural attractions.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Geysir Airport. The permanent construction on the former runway and the high commercial value of the land for tourism development make a future reopening virtually impossible. Any future aviation needs for sightseeing or private transport in the area would be served by other regional airfields, such as Selfoss Airport (BISF) or Sandskeið Airport (BISS).
