Circa 1996-1997
Land redevelopment for motorsports. The airfield was not closed due to economic failure or an accident, but was intentionally repurposed after the land was leased to a motorsports organization. In 1996, the Icelandic Drag Racing Association (Kvartmíluklúbburinn) secured a long-term lease for the site to establish a permanent, dedicated drag racing facility. Construction and conversion took place, with the first official race being held in the summer of 1997.
The site is now a dedicated and active motorsports venue known as 'Kvartmílubrautin' (The Quarter Mile Track). It is the premier drag racing facility in Iceland, operated by the Kvartmíluklúbburinn (The Quarter Mile Club/Icelandic Drag Racing Association). The former runway has been converted into a professional drag strip, complete with starting line systems ('Christmas tree'), timing equipment, a burnout box, and safety barriers. The surrounding area has been developed with spectator stands, pit areas, and support buildings for hosting national drag racing competitions throughout the summer.
Einholtsmelar Airport was a small general aviation airfield, likely constructed in the early 1980s. It primarily served private pilots and the local flying club, Flugklúbbur Suðurlands (South Iceland Flying Club). The airport consisted of a single paved runway and provided a crucial landing and recreational flying facility in a rural part of South Iceland. It did not handle commercial, scheduled, or military operations; its significance was purely for the local general aviation community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the site as an airport. It is a well-established and purpose-built motorsports facility with significant infrastructure dedicated to drag racing. The Icelandic Drag Racing Association holds a long-term lease on the property, making any conversion back to an airfield extremely unlikely.
