Officially superseded in March 2021. The airstrip was likely inactive or used very infrequently for years prior to this date, with its final closure coinciding with the opening of a new, modern airport for the city.
Infrastructure replacement and economic development. The Bafgh Airport (IR-0185) was a very basic, unpaved airstrip that was inadequate for modern aviation needs. It was officially replaced by the new, paved Shahid Sadooghi Bafgh Airport (ICAO: OIFY), which was constructed to handle commercial passenger and cargo flights to support the region's significant industrial and mining activities. The old airstrip was rendered obsolete.
The site is abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (31.583332, 55.566666) shows the clear but deteriorating outline of the former dirt runway in an undeveloped desert area. There are no remaining buildings or infrastructure on the site, and it is not being used for any other purpose.
IR-0185 was a small, rudimentary airstrip with a single dirt runway approximately 1,500 meters long. It was not a public commercial airport. Its primary historical function was to provide basic air access for the city of Bafgh, which is a major center for iron ore mining in Iran. Operations were limited to light aircraft, likely used for transporting mining company personnel, conducting aerial surveys, or for emergency medical evacuations. Its significance was purely logistical for the local industry before modern infrastructure was established.
There are zero prospects for reopening this old airstrip. All investment, development, and aviation operations for Bafgh have been permanently consolidated at the new Bafgh Airport (OIFY), which officially opened in 2021. The old site (IR-0185) is considered permanently closed and has no future role in aviation.
