Approximately 1979
The airport was closed following the 1979 Iranian Revolution. It was a private airfield exclusively serving the adjacent luxury resort town of Daryakenar (دریاکنار), a project developed during the Pahlavi era. After the revolution, the resort complex was confiscated and its purpose changed, rendering the private airport obsolete and politically unpalatable. The closure was a direct result of this political and social shift, not due to economic, safety, or standard operational reasons.
The airport no longer exists. The site has been completely redeveloped and is now fully integrated into the Daryakenar resort town. The former runway has been converted into the town's main central boulevard, now named 'Pasdaran Boulevard' (or 'First Street' locally). It is lined with villas, apartment buildings, parks, and commercial shops. There are no remaining traces of the original airport infrastructure like a terminal or hangars.
Babolsar Airport, more accurately known as the Daryakenar Airfield, was a private general aviation airport built in the 1960s. Its sole purpose was to serve the residents and visitors of Daryakenar, one of Iran's first and most exclusive coastal resort towns. The airport catered to private jets and charter flights, allowing wealthy Iranians and international tourists to fly directly to the vacation community. It was a symbol of the pre-revolutionary era's modernization and luxury development projects, representing a lifestyle of exclusivity and convenience for the elite.
None. The land has been entirely and permanently redeveloped with dense residential and commercial infrastructure. Reopening an airport at this location is impossible. While there have been occasional discussions about building a new regional airport to serve the cities of Babolsar and Fereydunkenar, these plans are unrelated to this specific historical site.
