Amol Airport

The primary reason for the airport's closure was urban encroachment. The city of Amol expanded significantly, with residential and industrial areas developing directly adjacent to the airport's perimeter. This made continued flight operations increasingly unsafe and impractical, and it prevented any potential for runway extension or facility upgrades. The valuable land was subsequently reallocated for economic and recreational development by local authorities.

The site is no longer an airport but has been repurposed. The original runway pavement is still visible but is now used as a motorsport venue and driver training course. It hosts local car and motorcycle races, drifting events, and serves as a practice area for drivers. The surrounding land has been integrated into an industrial or special economic zone, with various commercial buildings occupying the former airport grounds. The site is officially known in the area as the Amol Automotive Racing Track (پیست اتومبیلرانی آمل).

Amol Airport was a small, local airfield that never handled scheduled commercial passenger flights. Its primary function was to support general aviation. Operations included flights for light aircraft, pilot training, and potentially agricultural aviation (such as crop dusting), given the fertile nature of the Mazandaran province. Its significance was limited to the local level, serving as a basic aviation facility for the city before its growth made the airport's location untenable.

There are zero prospects for reopening the original Amol Airport (IR-0181). The land has been permanently repurposed, and the surrounding urban development makes a return to aviation activities impossible. However, for many years there have been separate and distinct proposals to construct a new, modern international airport to serve Amol and the central Mazandaran region. These plans have been discussed by officials but have faced numerous delays due to funding, land acquisition, and political issues, and as of now, construction has not commenced.
