The airport was officially and permanently closed to all air traffic around 2010. The final decision to transfer the land from the Islamic Republic of Iran Army to the Tehran Municipality for redevelopment was finalized in 2009, with the park's construction beginning shortly after.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment. Located in the southern part of Tehran, the airport became completely surrounded by dense residential and commercial development over the decades. This created significant safety hazards for both aircraft operations and the local population. Furthermore, its central location made the land extremely valuable for urban redevelopment, specifically for creating much-needed public green space in a congested part of the city.
The site of the former airport has been completely transformed into a large urban park named 'Boustan-e Velayat' (Velayat Park). Opened to the public in 2011, it is one of the largest recreational and green spaces in southern Tehran. The park's design intentionally preserved elements of its aviation past; the main runways and some taxiways were repurposed as long, wide boulevards, walking paths, and cycling tracks, making its former identity still recognizable from satellite imagery and on the ground.
Ghale Morghi holds a preeminent place in Iranian aviation history as it was the first airport established in Iran. Its history began in 1922 when the first aircraft, a German Junkers F 13, was imported and assembled on this site. It subsequently became the founding base for the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF), serving as its main headquarters and training center for many years. For a period, it handled both military and the country's earliest civilian flights before the construction and expansion of Mehrabad Airport. Even after Mehrabad became Tehran's primary airport, Ghale Morghi continued to function as a key military base for the air force and army aviation, primarily for helicopter and light aircraft training and operations, until its closure.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Ghale Morghi Airport. The land has been irrevocably converted into a major public park that serves millions of residents. Given its location deep within the urban fabric of Tehran, reverting it to an active airfield is logistically, environmentally, and politically impossible. The city's aviation needs are served by Mehrabad International Airport (for domestic flights) and Imam Khomeini International Airport (for international flights).
