Approximately 1994-1995. The airport was decommissioned and closed following the construction and inauguration of the new, modern Yasuj Airport (IATA: YES, ICAO: OISY), which is located several kilometers to the northwest of the old site.
The primary reason for closure was its replacement by a new facility. The old airport had become inadequate for several reasons:
1. **Urban Encroachment:** The city of Yasuj expanded around the airport, making it a safety hazard and limiting any potential for expansion.
2. **Inadequate Infrastructure:** It had a very short runway and limited facilities, which could not accommodate larger, modern passenger aircraft required to meet growing demand.
3. **Topographical Constraints:** Its location was challenging for flight operations due to the surrounding mountainous terrain. The new airport was built in a more suitable location with better approach paths.
The site of the former airport has been completely absorbed by the urban development of Yasuj. The old runway has been repurposed and is now a major city artery named Pasdaran Boulevard (Boulvare Pasdaran). The surrounding area, once the airport grounds, is now a densely populated residential and commercial neighborhood with buildings, shops, and parks. The physical infrastructure of the airport is entirely gone.
Established in the mid-1960s (around 1966-1967), this was the first airport to serve Yasuj and the surrounding Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province. For decades, it was a vital transportation link, connecting this mountainous and relatively isolated region to the rest of Iran. It primarily handled small propeller-driven aircraft for domestic passenger and light cargo services, playing a crucial role in the economic and social development of the province before it was outgrown by the city's needs.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been irreversibly redeveloped into a core part of the city's infrastructure. All aviation services for the region are handled by the current Yasuj Airport (OISY), which continues to operate and receive upgrades.
