The site is a fully functional public airport known as Kharg Airport (OIBQ/KHK). It features a single asphalt runway (13/31) approximately 2,345 meters (7,694 feet) long. The airport primarily handles domestic scheduled and charter flights for the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and its subsidiaries, connecting the island's workforce and residents to major cities like Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, and Ahvaz. Airlines such as Karun Airlines and Mahan Air have historically operated services to the airport.

Kharg Airport holds immense strategic and economic importance for Iran. Its primary historical and ongoing role is to support the massive oil and petrochemical industries on Kharg Island, which is the country's main crude oil export terminal. The airport has been essential for transporting thousands of oil industry personnel, technicians, and equipment to and from the mainland. During the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), the island and its airport were heavily and repeatedly targeted by Iraqi air strikes in an attempt to cripple Iran's oil exports, making the airport a key site in the 'Tanker War' phase of the conflict.
