Project halted circa late 2021 / early 2022. The airport was never completed or opened for operations.
The project was halted by government and judicial order due to being deemed redundant and economically unjustifiable. A consensus was reached among Iran's Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, the armed forces, and other government bodies that expanding and upgrading the nearby, existing Konarak Airport (IATA: ZBR, ICAO: OIZC) was a more viable and efficient solution to meet the region's air traffic needs. The construction also faced legal and jurisdictional disputes over land and authority between the Chabahar Free Zone Organization and the military.
The site is an abandoned construction project. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a partially graded and paved runway and some taxiway earthworks. There are no terminal buildings, control towers, or other essential airport infrastructure. All construction activity has ceased.
The airport never became operational and therefore has no history of flight operations. Its significance is as a major infrastructure project that was initiated in November 2020 to support the growth of the Chabahar Free Trade-Industrial Zone and the strategic Chabahar Port. It was envisioned as a dedicated international passenger and cargo hub. However, its subsequent cancellation highlights the complex civil-military coordination and strategic infrastructure planning challenges in the region.
Prospects for resuming construction and opening this specific airport are effectively zero. The official national and regional strategy has shifted entirely to the development, modernization, and expansion of the existing Konarak Airport (ZBR/OIZC). All investment and planning efforts for Chabahar's aviation future are now focused on that facility, making the new airport project obsolete.
