• Limited On-Site Facilities and Accommodation: The base camp itself offers minimal facilities, primarily a souvenir shop, War Memorial, and Shiv Temple. There are no accommodation options directly at the base camp; travelers must stay in nearby villages such as Warshi, Khalsar, Panamik, or Sumur.
• Harsh Environmental Conditions: The extreme high altitude (over 12,000 feet) and severe cold, which can drop to -50 degrees Celsius in winter, necessitate adequate physical fitness and acclimatization, posing a challenge for some visitors.
• Restricted Access Beyond Civilian Areas: While the civilian tourist facility is open, access to the actual military base camp and areas beyond 15,000 feet (such as Kumar Post in most cases) remains restricted for tourists. Tourists are generally only allowed up to the OP Baba Shrine, which is 2-3 kilometers from the main base camp.
• Environmental Fee and Checkposts: Despite not needing an Army permit, domestic tourists are still required to pay an environmental fee collected by the District Administration. Ladakh police have established checkposts to monitor tourist movement.
• No International Tourist Access: Foreign citizens are currently not permitted to visit Siachen Base Camp due to its sensitive military status.
