Approximately October 4, 2010. The airfield was rendered immediately inoperable by a catastrophic flash flood and was later permanently decommissioned following the construction of a replacement airport.
The primary reason for closure was the severe damage and destruction caused by the Wasior flash flood on October 4, 2010. The low-lying coastal airfield was inundated with water, mud, logs, and other debris, making it completely unusable. Following this natural disaster, the government decided to build a new, safer airport (Wondama Airport, IATA: WSR) at a higher elevation and further inland. The opening of this new facility made the old, flood-prone Sagan Airfield permanently obsolete.
The site of the former Sagan Airfield is completely defunct and no longer used for any aviation purposes. Satellite imagery shows that the faint outline of the runway is still visible, but it is overgrown with grass and vegetation. The area has been partially repurposed for community use, with a local road now cutting across the southern end of the former airstrip and some buildings constructed on or adjacent to the old airfield grounds.
For many years, Sagan Airfield was the sole and vital air link for the town of Wasior and the surrounding Teluk Wondama Regency. Due to its short runway, it primarily served small Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft, such as the DHC-6 Twin Otter, Pilatus Porter, and Cessna Caravan. Its operations were critical for the community and included:
- **Pioneer (Perintis) Flights:** Government-subsidized passenger and cargo flights connecting Wasior to regional hubs like Manokwari and Nabire.
- **Missionary Aviation:** Services provided by organizations like Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) for medical evacuations, transport of personnel, and delivery of supplies to remote villages.
- **Charter and Government Flights:** Transport for government officials, private company personnel (logging, etc.), and emergency services.
It was an essential lifeline for the isolated region's economy, healthcare, and administration.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Sagan Airfield. All air services for the Wasior region have been permanently and successfully transferred to the new, larger, and safer Wondama Airport (also known as Tandia Airport; IATA: WSR, ICAO: WAUW), which officially began operations around 2015-2016. All government investment and focus on aviation infrastructure in the regency are directed towards the new airport, rendering the old site's reopening both unnecessary and impractical.
