The airport was officially closed and replaced due to the inauguration of the new, larger, and more modern Haji Muhammad Sidik Airport (IATA: HMS, ICAO: WAQH). The primary reasons for the replacement were:
1. **Inadequate Infrastructure:** Beringin Airport had a very short runway (approximately 900 meters by 23 meters), which could only accommodate small, pioneer-class aircraft like the Cessna Grand Caravan. This severely limited passenger capacity and the potential for economic growth.
2. **Location Constraints:** The airport was located in the center of Muara Teweh city. This urban location made it impossible to extend the runway or expand terminal facilities to meet modern safety standards and growing demand.
3. **Improved Connectivity:** The new Haji Muhammad Sidik Airport was built with a longer runway (initially 1,400 meters, with plans for extension) capable of handling larger turboprop aircraft like the ATR 72. This allows for direct flights from larger cities, significantly improving connectivity for the North Barito Regency and supporting regional economic development.
Following its closure, the land and assets of the former Beringin Airport were handed over from the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation to the local government of North Barito Regency. The site is currently slated for major redevelopment. As of recent plans, the area is being transformed into a public urban space. The proposed uses include a green open space (Ruang Terbuka Hijau - RTH), a culinary center, sports facilities, and potentially a creative hub or new government offices. The goal is to utilize the prime, city-center real estate for the public benefit and prevent the abandoned site from deteriorating.
For decades, Beringin Airport was the sole air gateway to Muara Teweh and the surrounding North Barito Regency, a remote area in Central Kalimantan. Its historical significance lies in its role as a vital hub for government-subsidized 'pioneer flights' (known in Indonesia as 'penerbangan perintis'). These flights were essential for connecting the isolated community to regional centers like Palangkaraya (PKY) and Banjarmasin (BDJ). Airlines such as Susi Air operated services using small aircraft, providing critical transportation for passengers, medical evacuations, mail, and light cargo. The airport was a lifeline for the region, overcoming the challenges of long-distance travel via river or underdeveloped road networks.
There are zero prospects for Beringin Airport to reopen for aviation purposes. Its operational role has been permanently superseded by the new Haji Muhammad Sidik Airport, which is the focus of all current and future aviation development for the region. The old airport's location within a dense urban area makes it unsuitable and unsafe for modern flight operations. All official plans are focused on the non-aviation redevelopment of the land.
THIS AIRPORT IS CLOSED PERMENANTLY
