Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 1980s to early 1990s. The exact date is not well-documented, but its closure coincided with the growth of the city and the full operational capacity of the new, larger Bontang Airport (BXT/WRLC) which was built to support the massive Bontang LNG Plant.

Reason for Closure

Urban development and replacement. The aerodrome was a simple airstrip located in an area that was rapidly developing into the city center of Bontang. As the city expanded around it, the land became highly valuable for civic and commercial use. Operations were consolidated and moved to the more modern and better-equipped PT Badak Bontang Airport (BXT), which was built specifically to serve the needs of the large-scale oil and gas industry.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the administrative and civic center of Bontang. The former runway and airfield grounds are occupied by the Bontang City Government Complex (Kantor Walikota Bontang), the Bessai Berinta Stadium (also known as Stadion Mulawarman), public parks, roads, and various commercial and residential buildings. The straight alignment of a major road in the area still hints at the location of the former runway, but no aviation infrastructure remains.

Historical Significance

This was the original pioneer airstrip for the Bontang area. Before the construction of the large LNG facility and the formal establishment of the city, this aerodrome was the primary air link. It was crucial for the initial phases of oil and gas exploration and development, likely operated by state-owned Pertamina or its partners. It handled small, short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) propeller aircraft, such as the DHC-6 Twin Otter and Britten-Norman Islander, which were used to transport personnel, essential supplies, and light cargo to and from what was then a remote location.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Bontang Selatan Aerodrome. The land has been irrevocably converted to dense urban use with critical government and public infrastructure built upon it. All air traffic for the city is handled by the active Bontang Airport (BXT/WRLC).
